Local children find forever homes at ‘Adoption Saturday’ event
ST. LOUIS, Mo. (First Alert 4) - A mass adoption event was held at the St. Louis County Courthouse on Saturday. There are 28 children who now have permanent homes before the Thanksgiving holiday.
‘Adoption Saturday’ is a national event held yearly on or around the Saturday before Thanksgiving. It was started in Los Angeles by Judge Michael Nash as a way to finalize adoptions to reduce a backlog. In 2000, a coalition began to encourage cities to open their courts to celebrate these adoptions.
It’s the eighth year the St. Louis County Courthouse held an ‘Adoption Saturday’ event. This year, Zion Graves, found his forever home.
“You know I’ve been waiting for this for a long time and now my dreams are coming true,” said Sheena Miller, mother.
Miller said she’s had guardianship of Zion since he was two weeks old and from that moment she knew she was going to adopt him as her own.
“Hey, it’s been hard waking up in the middle of the night, going to work 12-hour shifts, but you know what, it’s all worth it, it’s all worth it,” she said.
Miller said it hasn’t been an easy journey, but it’s one she would do again, as Zion has three other siblings.
“It’s been a true journey for me,” she said. “One of them my sister has already adopt, my other sister she’s already adopt the other sister. I’m adopting him today and my journey is to adopt his other sister in the near future.”
It’s a family that is pulling together to remain as one.
“You just don’t know the feeling that it is on what we have done to keep all of them in the family,” said Miller.
