Organization helps promote physical and mental health in young boys
BALLWIN, Mo. (First Alert 4) - For a group of third through fifth grade boys at Carman Trails Elementary, running is more than just an after-school activity -- it is a lesson in confidence, teamwork, and personal growth.
The students are part of Let Me Run, a national nonprofit that encourages young boys to develop both physically and emotionally. The program uses running as a tool to promote mental health and build friendships.
“I’ve learned some techniques that help me run faster and get bigger strides,” student Bear Ward said. “It just helps me a lot.”
But the lessons go beyond running!
“We’re writing compliments for the teammates we had in Let Me Run,” said Octavio Mendez, a student.
Organizers say the mission is simple: help boys become the best version of themselves, not by competing with others, but by growing together.
“It’s not about outdoing each other. It’s really about becoming the best versions of themselves — and that’s what we’re trying to do, grow men,” said Jamie Dresser, Let Me Run’s STL regional director.
For fifth grader Beckam Ward, the impact has been powerful.
“It’s just a good reminder that you can’t do everything on your own. Sometimes you need people to push you to do your best,” he said.
Step by step, the boys are learning that success isn’t just about speed — it’s about showing up for one another.
“They’re understanding how hard work really goes a long way,” said Cece Lamarche, head coach.
Because in this race, the strongest strides are the ones taken together.
The boys in the Let Me Run program will cap off their season with a 5k to celebrate their growth!
