Man shot overnight in the Central West End
ST. LOUIS, Mo. (First Alert 4) - A man was shot in the Central West End overnight.
The 33-year-old man was shot on Taylor around 3:15 a.m. on Monday. He was taken to the hospital and listed in critical but stable condition. Police said he is expected to survive.
Police believe the victim and suspect were involved in a verbal altercation before the shooting. The suspect ran off after the incident.
“A 33-year-old man who we believe is part of the unhoused community was shot after an exchange of words with an armed individual,” Mitch McCoy with SLMPD said.
Ivor Miller works nearby where the shooting took place and said it was concerning to hear about.
“You have a lot of foot traffic around here. Students. Employees. After hours. At night,” Miller said. “You have a lot of security on the campus, but I think over here probably needs more.”
The Central West End Neighborhood Security Initiative shared surveillance footage of the suspect running away. The NSI has 700 camera views throughout the neighborhood and executive director Jim Whyte said they are the largest contributor of security cameras to SLMPD’s Real Time Crime Center.
All of the NSI security cameras are able to be monitored by police 24/7. Whyte told First Alert 4 that the cameras are paid for by a property tax specifically for safety and security. Each month, a board of seven people who live or work in the neighborhood meet to discuss crime, safety and spending. Whyte said the cameras play a vital role in keeping police and residents informed on what is going on in the neighborhood.
Miller said, despite the neighborhood being safe, there is more that can be done.
“Foot patrol, I think, would help. If you see police officers walking around and things like that, it may have you not do the ill will you were thinking about doing,” Miller said.
The investigation remains ongoing.
